Wearing the limited-edition t-shirt from the 106-year-old restaurant will symbolize restaurant lovers standing with their favorite independent restaurants to help save and support them in a trying time. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Independent Restaurant Coalition estimates that 85% of independent restaurants may close by the end of the year, without significant federal aid. The group is currently lobbying for this type of national support, calling on Congress to approve a $120 billion “Restaurant Stabilization Fund” that will lend funds to restaurants in need. Current donations to the organization, including those made with this collaboration, will be used to continue to fight for federal support.

Along with Gyllenhaal, several celebrities have lended their voice and personalities to help support restaurants in 2020. Celebrity chef and Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio has been a face of the movement, along with co-star and Taste The Nation creator Padma Lakshmi. In early August, chef Andrew Zimmern paired up with actor Morgan Freeman to create a PSA on why the federal government needs to save restaurants. “Neighborhood restaurants are the lifeblood of our communities,” Freeman narrates in his powerful, recognizable voice in the video. “They are where we come together and make life-long memories — and right now they are facing extinction.”
